Our Seizures

Febrile Seizures - a convulsion in young children caused by a sudden spike in body temperature, often from an infection. During a febrile seizure, a child often loses consciousness and shakes, moving limbs on both sides of the body and convulses. Less commonly, the child becomes rigid or has twitches in only a portion of the body, such as an arm or a leg, or on the right or the left side only.

I've felt prompted more than once to share some info. about fever induced seizures...

Way back when Tanner was 13 months old he had a low fever from teething and had his first of many febrile seizures. Being a new mom and all, I hadn't heard of a child having seizures from a fever so I REALLY THOUGH MY TANNER WAS DYING OR HAVING SOME PERMANENT BRAIN DAMAGE. After the paramedics arrived I was RELIEVED to hear that most likely it was a fever induced seizure and to not worry about my baby any more. We were transported to the E.R. and the Dr's confirmed that as long as Tanner had a rise in body temperature, than I shouldn't worry, that that is what INDUCED his seizure.

The pediatric Dr's said that I can't prevent his seizures from occurring. I said well when he has a fever can't I give him Tylenol and Motrin back to back till he appears to be well again? The Dr's probably think I'm crazy but they aren't the ones that have held their son repeatedly during a seizure when he's unconscious, seizing and there's nothing you can do to stop it!

We thought Tanner had grown out of this phase but unfortunately he had his 6th seizure in August of this year. Poor Brookie was right there and asked if Tanner was dying. We met with a neurologist last month and he said that it's not out of the norm for it to still occur up until pre-adolescence. I have to say that through the awesome power of the priesthood, Tanner has been watched over and protected. I have been with him each and every time he's had a seizure. Since Tanner's been able to get out of bed by himself, he has walked to my bedside every time he's had a fever in the middle of the night for the past 4 years. Often Tanner will say he feels fine but he still woke up and came to my bed side. I know angels are watching over him and protecting him and me I might add!

I'm sharing this for EVERYONE TO BE AWARE of this condition or those of you that haven't shared Tanner's story, please spread the word.  If I would have only known before our first seizure, life that day would have been a lot different.

Febrile Seizures are genetic. Thankfully Brookie and Kaden haven't had any seizures. The neurologist said that most likely they are in the clear. It will just be a waiting game for our new little addition next year! One of my nephews on my side of the family has had two seizures and one of my nephews on Sean's side of the family has had one seizure. Thankfully their Mom's knew why the seizures were occurring, but it's still not easy.
